Ready to have more control over your online marketing? The Ultimate List Building Guide That Works for Everyone will show you the way.
The Ultimate List Building Guide That Works For Everyone will walk you through how to start growing your email list from scratch and or help to build up the email list you already have.
It will take work to decide on what lead magnet to create, the plans to build out your landing page, write the content for your emails, put the sequences in your email management software and then marketing it.
However, what I can promise you is whatever energy you put into building your email list is the same kind of energy you will get back from it.
If you take short cuts then expect to receive that same kind of energy in return and results.
If you are ready to do the work required to build and or grow your email list and fill it with dream clients who are ready and willing to up you for your talents and services then get prepared for all the incredible energy you will receive in return.
You don’t have to do this alone. If you have a Virtual Assistant or want to hire someone to help you DO THAT. It does matter HOW it gets does as long as it GETS done.
What is list building and why should you care?
WHAT IS LIST BUILDING?
List building is a method of collecting email addresses to build a database filled with people who are interested in the kind of products and or services you offer.
WHY SHOULD I CARE?
There is magic in having an email list for a few reasons, and I share my top three for you below:
- When people opt-in (sign up) to your email list it gives them the opportunity to get to know you. It’s proven that people buy from people they know, like and trust!
- You get target audiences attention right there in their inbox. You get to provide them with tons of value and can to sell to them over and over again. It’s a fact that more sales are more via email than on social media.
- It’s collateral you can control, unlike social media. If Facebook, Instagram, and others were to shut down tomorrow, you would still have access to your clients and potential customers.
Your Target Audience
WHO DO YOU SERVE?
I am surprised how this question stumps so many entrepreneurs.
As a small business owner, this is by far one of the most important questions anyone will ever ask you.
This very question can do one of two things, help to quantum leap your business forward or hold it back.
Every day I encounter entrepreneurs who skip right over knowing who their ideal client is to trying desperately to serve everyone.
Everyone is not your client, everyone does not want or need what you are selling.
If you are busy trying to sell to everyone, no one is listening. You must be very clear who you serve as this will help you when it comes time to create content like, lead magnets, landing pages, emails, social media posts, and Facebook Ads.
If you are struggling to get clients or you hear crickets when you put out new content, a lead magnet or an offer there is a good chance you are not super clear on who you serve or what they want and need.
Before you can move on to the next step of creating a lead magnet you first have to get clear on who you serve.
If you are not clear on your client avatar(s) create it now by writing down the following information:
Biographical info: Name, age, gender, income, location, profession, etc.
Values: What do they care about? What are their goals, hopes, dreams?
Pain points: What do they struggle with? What keeps them awake at night?
Favorite sources of info/entertainment: What blogs, magazines or books do they read? What are their favorite TV shows?
Role in purchase process: Do they have the final say when it comes to purchasing your service/product, or do they have to ask a spouse, a parent or a boss?
Objections / Mindset Blocks to the sale: What are their main objections to purchasing your service/product?
Once you know who you serve you will then better understand what they want, need and how you can best provide those very things.
If you want to dive deeper into creating your ideal client avatar click the link to read my blog post 6 Steps to Re-Defining Your Ideal Client or download The Ultimate List Building Guide to access the ideal client worksheets.
Now that you know who you serve it’s time to get clear on what you can do to help them. If you have more than one client avatar choose one and review their pain points.
What kind of PAID program, service or product do you provide or can create to help them with their pain point(s)?
Based on your paid offer you want to create what I call an instant win for your ideal client, and that is the very thing you will use as a lead magnet to attract them even before you introduce your offer.
What is an instant win?
An instant win is solving one of your ideal client’s challenges or pain points quickly.
An example of this is your ideal client may be struggling with pricing her/his services. You have a program teaching your target audience how to package and sell their services.
You create an income calculator for your program as a tool to help your ideal clients. Even though your program is about way more than pricing, you pull the calculator out of the program and start using it as a lead magnet to help your ideal clients resolve one of their challenges quickly.
Let’s break it down:
You are attracting your ideal clients using a targeted lead magnet. The lead magnet has terrific value and gives them an instant win. You provide even more value via email and make an offer your ideal clients cannot refuse.
Remember you are the expert. There are people out there waiting to pay you for your expertise. It doesn’t matter if it’s been done before people will pay you for the solution YOU have for them
Type of Lead Magnets
Once you have a pretty good idea of what your lead magnet is going to be select the type of lead magnet that would work best for your ideal clients from the list below:

I know many of you are thinking, but I am not a designer. Well neither am I!
Never did I think in a million years that I would or could be as creative as I am in my business.
I was the girl who made stick figures in art class and lopsided clay and pottery molds.
Moreover, now when I look through the digital downloadables and social media graphics I’ve created, I am still amazed.
I did not have the money to spare for a professional when I first started my business. My only option was to figure it out and do it myself or give up, and we all know that giving up is not an option.
I taught myself how to create designs like these. When you don’t have the money to pay somene else you figure it out yourself.
If your solution is in the form of a digital download or product, you can create it using Canva.com. Canva is super easy to use and has over 50,000 templates for you to choose them.
Any template you select can be changed and styled the way you like. I promise it’s easier than you think and more user-friendly than any other DIY design tool online.
FYI I designed the downloadable version of The Ultimate List Building Guide That Works for Everyone using Canva. You Can DOWNLOAD IT HERE.
One of the essential steps in this guide is your email automation software if you are already using one GREAT no need to switch up services for this guide.
If you do not have an email automation software, you will need one. The email automation software will work seamlessly with your landing page software (we will dive into that next) to deliver your digital downloadable/freebie/lead magnet right into the email inboxes of your target audience.
I highly recommend ConvetKit.com if you are just getting started. They offer a free trial, and it’s only $29 per month to get started if your list is under 1000 subscribers.
Of course, there are tons of other email automation software like MailChimp, Ontraport, Drip, Get Response and several others that will work.
Email your digital downloadable in 3 steps
Within your email automation software, draft the first email your new subscriber will receive with a link to the digital download. Be sure you fill it with personality.
- Set the email to go out to your subscribers immediately. This means as soon as they sign up they will receive an email with your lead magnet.
- Connect your email marketing software to your landing page software to help make the process seamless. (we get more into landing pages next)l receive an email with your lead magnet.
THE 5-DAY EMAIL NURTURE SEQUENCE
After setting up the initial emails, it’s time to draft an additional five follow up emails and schedule each of them to go out one day apart after the initial email.
You’ll want to ensure you stay on topic with whatever they signed up for to get on your list and provide massive value in your next three emails.
Providing value can include teaching something they can take action on immediately or providing tips/resources.
If you have a course or product to sell, tease it in the first two emails. You can do that by just saying you will be sharing an out of this world solution to help them with XYZ problem.
Use the last three of the five emails to pitch your offer.
Please keep in mind to ensure that the emails are value based and provide solutions to their immediate problems. They signed up for your expertise which means they need your help.
The Landing Page
Now to the good part.
For anyone to gain access to your lead magnet, you will need a place to send them.
A landing page is perfect because they have no other distractions. When people land on your landing page (by way or various methods of marketing) they are presented with your offer and nothing more.
I know many of you may be thinking “what about my website.” Your website is a good start to grab the attention of people that are coming to your website.
But there are a few reasons you may want to consider using a landing page.
3 Reasons To Use a Landing Page vs Your Website
If you don’t heavy traffic on our website adding your lead magnet will not automatically bring traffic. You have to direct people to your site so they can then take action.
The problem with sending traffic to your website when you want them to sign up/opt-in for something is that they may become distracted by all your pics, your blog post, your podcast, etc.
How many times have you visited someone’s website to read a blog post and end up on there about page and then oh look a video that takes you off their page and on to Youtube?
Before you know it, you are watching cute cat videos, makeup or hair tutorials and completely forget about the website.
3 reasons you should use a landing page vs your website:
- A landing page only asks for people to take action on one thing.
- There are far less distractions on a landing page than your website.
- More conversions take place on landing pages.
A landing page creates a very clear call to action for people visiting the page with little to no distractions.
People visiting a landing page are either going to do one of two things.
1) Sign up for your lead magnet.
2) Not sign up for your lead magnet.
For those who sign up great and for those who don’t, no problem they aren’t your ideal client or maybe that specific offer is not what the needed at the time.
Once someone signs up for your landing page, you want to thank them for taking that action.
Thank You Pages
A “thank you” landing page is a perfect way to set the tone with your new email subscribers and let them know they are valued.
You can create your thank you page using the same landing page software you used to create the landing page for your lead magnet.
After someone signs up for your lead magnet on your landing page, the software will immediately redirect them to your “thank you” page. (You will need to set this up manually to ensure your leads are redirected.)
You can add a link to your lead magnet on your thank you page to give instant access to the digital download in addition to emailing it to them.
You can also invite them to your Facebook group or add a trip wire (offering a low-cost product).
My landing page software of choice is Leadpages.net because they have a variety of templates to choose from and it super easy to create a landing page with their drag and drop editor.
However, of course, there are tons of others.
Select the best software for your budget and learning style.
You only have 15 seconds to capture someones attention before they click off your page.
Not all landing pages are created equal. Some landing pages convert better than others.
To ensure your landing page converts (people are signing up) you want to make it so that whoever lands on your landing page immediately knows if it is something they need or not.
You landing page title/header should speak to one of your audiences pain points in such a way that they know right away that they need whatever it is you are offering.
A second subheader, small than the first can go into a little more detail and speak to the solution you are offering. You can also add a small about of text that gives more detail on what the download is (spreadsheet, workbook, guide, planner, and the like).
Adding an attention-grabbing image can also help your audience see themselves in that situation, and in return make them take action to sign up.
Be sure to add a call to action button so your audience can sign up with ease.
6 Point Checklist for Landing Pages That Converts
- Page header/title that speaks to your audience’s problem/pain point.
- Subheader that spells out of your solution to their problem/pain point.
- An attention-grabbing image.
- A small amount of content/text that briefly tells my audience what’s in or on the download.
- Call to action button that speaks in my audiences voice (send me the download, YES I am in sign me up, etc).
The checklist version of this 5-point checklist can be accessed in the Ultimate List Building Guide That Works for Everyone downloadable guide. You can DOWNLOAD IT HERE.
If you have completed all the steps before this one, you should be very proud of your self.
You did not only gotten clear on who you serve, but you also created an offer/product, created a lead magnet, created the initial email, the 5- day follow email sequence and created a landing page.
What you have just done my friend is built your first funnel!
It’s time to get your lead magnet out to the world! Now it’s time to get busy!
Now that you have a functioning funnel it’s time to drive as much traffic as possible to it. There are so many ways to do this. Let’s walks through a few of them.
Based on your ideal client and your product/offering decided which platform works best for you and post images, videos, do livestreams, etc. and always share the link back to your lead magnet landing page.
Facebook Ads are AMAZING and can help you get more eyes on your content. You DON’T have to spend thousands or even hundreds of dollars to run Facebook ADS you can spend as much or as little as you like.
Adding images and links back to your lead magnet landing page throughout our website and blog helps to drive more traffic to it.
OTHER PEOPLES AUDIENCES
Getting features of other peoples podcasts and or websites are great ways to get your lead magnet in front of an entirely new audience for FREE.
Posting the link in areas like your email signature, in your ebook, your Youtube videos, or sharing the link at networking and speaking events will help to drive even more traffic to your lead magnet.
